John Varvatos decided to stay true to his brand’s aesthetics for Spring 2012 by putting on a show that attained a poetic spirit that, quite literally, flowed from start to finish.

These modernized seventies-inspired looks are reminiscent of the hair rock era when rockers and fashion designers alike were largely interested in leading the opposition against the structured feel of past decades. The derived influences of John Lennon and the hippie era of Saint Laurent’s menswear presentations can be seen through the impeccably draped tops, the beautifully worn jackets, and the loose-fitting suiting options. This collection is most definitely a go-to for anybody that wants to relive that glorious time in history or simply earn a few “cool points” within your social group.

Varvatos knows what his customers need and want out of their wardrobes. He gives them collection after collection that keeps them coming back for more. This time around, for the John Varvatos groupies, it’s free and easy for Summer.

In the ever popular neutral color palette, just a tad darker,  John Varvatos rolls up pants, readying you for a stroll on the beach.

The beginning was all about the suiting with a variety of youthful coats, blazers, vests, and trousers, all accented with the classic Varvatos summer-scarves that were done in plaid. The plaid eventually moved from scarf, to shirt, to jacket, and finally on to the complete suit. Although classy, the whole collection was done to look un-done, which carried throughout the collection and added to the appeal of easy dressing. Suits turn into mostly tan colored separates, and eventually to the only color in the show – purple. The purple was only used in a few looks, hues varying by item. The purple then weened out as knit tops as pops in the darker part of the show. The final looks, all black, showcased a masterful layering technique, like the rest of the show.

One of the best ways I can describe John Varvatos is “a youthful elegance”, basically the way young people dress to look nice but it’s not strict, always free and easy.

The looks in this show are prime examples of the reason why I always love Varvatos’ collections.

Romantic, refined, edgy, and slightly morbid – words that rarely fit well together, but somehow create the genius that is John Varvatos Fall 2010. If your one to think that suits are all the same no matter how you cut it, then think again. There is something oddly youthful here, and a quilted vest over a matching suit rarely screams out of the box.

Whether it was the seemingly millions of candles that acted as the collections backdrop or the shows rock ballads, this was Varvatos at his best. Compromising his aesthetic for no one, but managing to create something that would even satisfy a Balmain Homme-goer go crazy, Vartatos this season adds zips to standard buttoned up suits, fingerless gloves to the most classic of looks, and whilst using a cast of the industries freshest yet well known faces.
